Knowledge Transfer and Exchange Model (EMTReK) and Support

Despite increasing levels of research being carried out in health care settings, there are several challenges to the implementation of evidence into practice and policy development. To meet this challenge the All Ireland Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care (AIIHPC) funded a research project with University College Dublin and Ulster University to develop a knowledge transfer and exchange model EMTReK for use in palliative care research.

Knowledge Transfer and Exchange Model (EMTReK)

This model supports researchers to disseminate their knowledge to the right audience using accessible content in the right way to improve the awareness, knowledge and engagement with palliative care research on the island of Ireland and internationally.

EMTReK (Evidence-based Model for the Transfer and Exchange of Research Knowledge) is used by researchers and organisations, such as the European Association for Palliative Care (EAPC), to improve knowledge transfer and exchange within the palliative care field.

AIIHPC Supports for Knowledge Translation

AIIHPC as an established knowledge broker can unlock the potential of the research from AIIHPC member organisations’ from PCRN members, ECRF members and clinical staff to reach key knowledge users. We do this by supporting our members with knowledge translation activities and connecting them with palliative care providers, health agencies, hospices, academic institutions, charity organisations, policymakers, research funders, people with life-limiting conditions, families, carers, and community members.

Our members have access to knowledge translation support from AIIHPC for activities across the research cycle, from start to finish and beyond.

At the start AIIHPC supports you to develop a Knowledge Transfer Exchange Strategy and Plan for your research using the KTE model EMTReK including providing access to a free eLearning training module – Access on The Learning Platform.  We can support you with project web pages, blogs, podcasts and webinars to build awareness and engagement in your research through AIIHPC communication channels and published on The Palliative Hub Research. To ensure that any content you share with knowledge users is accessible and relevant we can connect you with our AIIHPC member organisations and AIIHPC Voices4Care group (people with life-limiting conditions, carers, bereaved carers and interested citizens).

We can help you with recruiting participants to your research including developing project surveys, participant recruitment adverts and sharing adverts through AIIHPC’s networks and communication channels. When you want to maximise impact on policy and practice, we can support you in developing and hosting workshops, seminars and webinars to your key audiences and knowledge users. We can also support you with developing plans to evaluate the impact of your knowledge translation activities.

For further information on how AIIHPC can support our member organisations with knowledge translation activities please contact AIIHPC’s dedicated Research Support and Knowledge Translation Lead, Dr Busra Ertugrul, at bertugrul@aiihpc.org.
